Because puppies and kittens grow so rapidly over the first few months of their lives, they have higher calorie, fat, and protein requirements. They need fuel to keep up with their body’s growth spurt. More specifically, they have twice the energy requirement of an adult. This is why your puppy or kitten may act like they cannot get enough food. Because of these high energy needs, you should feed your pet a high quality puppy or kitten food. Do not feed products labeled “Adult” or “Maintenance” Formula. A juvenile’s needs are much higher than the fat and protein that are provided in these foods. Begin by setting out the recommended amount on the label. Keep an eye on your puppy or kitten’s weight, and adjust as needed. Most cats and dogs won’t become overweight during their first six months because of their higher metabolism, but it is possible. Do not begin to switch over to an adult food until at least 6 months of age.
