Meet Our Team

  • Dr. David Luaces

    Dr. Luaces was born and raised in Redding, California. He is a 1998 graduate of Washington State University with a B.S. degree in Microbiology.  He is also a 2002 graduate of Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine having finished his clinical year at North Carolina State University.  Following graduation Dr. Luaces completed a rotating internship in surgery and medicine with VCA Berwyn/Franklin Park where he also met his wife Kathy.  In his free-time Dr. Luaces enjoys numerous outdoor activities including snowboarding, wakeboarding, mountain and road biking and triathlons. Dr. Luaces and Kathy share their home with their daughter Avery, “some” cats and Ned their 12-year old rescued Australian Shepherd.

  • Dr. Kara Tennant
    Veterinarian/Medical Director

    Dr. Tennant grew up in Sacramento, California and graduated with a B.S. in Biology from the University of California, Riverside in 2001. She then attended St. George's University School of Veterinary Medicine in Grenada, West Indies and graduated in 2006. After graduating, she moved to Northern Virginia, where she practiced for 9 years before deciding to move back home to California. She enjoys mentoring veterinary students and was part of the mentor program at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine for several years. Dr. Tennants professional interests include internal medicine, soft tissue surgery and zoonotic diseases. In her spare time, you will probably find her outdoors, as she especially loves trail-running, mountain biking, snowboarding and golfing. She has two cats, Jinx and Mini Jinx, (aka MJ), and two Australian cattle dogs named Dee and Target.

  • Dr. Diana Fantov
    Associate Veterinarian

    Dr. Fantov was born and raised in California, but spent the first part of her veterinary career in Oregon. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin, School of Veterinary Medicine in 1990, she worked for 5 years as a mixed animal practitioner on the beautiful Oregon Coast. Since then she has been concentrating on small animal medicine, with interests in internal medicine, nutrition, and herbal therapies. Dr. Fantov likes to incorporate both conventional and complimentary therapies to help your pet heal when ill and stay as healthy as possible. She and her husband have a small farm where they try and live a sustainable life style. They share their home with her horse, sheep, several dogs and stray cats as well as all of the wildlife.

  • Dr. Nina Akana
    Associate Veternarian

    Dr. Nina Akana was raised just up the road in Siskiyou County, in the small town of Montague.  She attended College of the Siskiyous for two years before transferring to UC Davis where she graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and minor in Animal Science.  Dr. Akana received her doctorate from the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in 2015.  Dr. Akana enjoys working with the various species and cases that come through the doors.  When not at the clinic, Dr. Akana can be found outdoors, hiking, biking, hunting, flying, snowboarding, wake boarding and above all enjoying good quality time with family and friends. She has one cat, one dog and a mini horse, Mr. James Dean.

  • Jaime Humphries
    Practice Manager

    Jaime was born and raised in Redding, CA. At a very young age she developed a passion for saving animals. After graduating high school, she attended Shasta College to work on her degree in biology. She has spent most of her adult life working in the veterinary profession, starting in kennels and eventually working her way up to practice manager. She spent several years working at an emergency veterinary hospital, before moving onto CARE Animal Hospital in July of 2012. In her spare time, Jaime enjoys traveling, fishing, backpacking, snowboarding, horseback riding and anything that has to do with being outside. She also has a love for music and dancing. Jaime shares her home with her husband and a pack of 4 dogs, 2 parrots, a saltwater fish tank, and a cat.

  • Kayla Dunn
    Veterinary Technician Supervisor

    Kayla was born in Orange County Ca. She moved to the North state at an early age. She has been in the Veterinary field for 10 years. She enjoys emergency care and wound management. On her down time she enjoys the outdoors with activities such as camping, hiking and kayaking on the lake.

  • Laurel Bickers
    Veterinary Technician

    Laurel moved to Northern California when she was 16 years old and loves the area. She has been in the veterinary industry for a total of 6 years now, and couldn't imagine working in any other field. At home Laurel enjoys spending time with her family, which includes her 2 children and 6 fur children. She also loves spending as much time as possible in nature.

  • Ashley Buchanan
    Veterinary Technician

    Ashley grew up in Anderson ca . After graduating high school Ashley attended Oregon state university to study animal science. Ashley has spent her adult life working in the veterinary field and enjoys anesthesiology ,radiology, and caring for local homeless animals. Ashley shares her home with her husband, her dog Remi, her cats, Hemi, Diesel, Shelby, and Turbo, her chickens and her fish . When Ashley is not at work you can find her camping or on the water somewhere

  • Kelly Cohen
    Pharmacy Technician

    Kelly has lived in Redding, CA most her life. She moved from Orinda, CA when she was 5 years old. She graduated from Foothill High School and went off to Shasta College to complete her veterinary technician classes. Kelly had worked with AllCats Veterinary Hospital for 6 years, and then it was changed to Care Animal Hospital. She loved being a receptionist for many years, but was moved to Pharmacy Technician when we started to expand. When Kelly is not working she enjoys exploring the outdoors. She loves everything from camping, fishing, hunting, wakeboarding, snowboarding and riding her horses. Kelly shares her home and land with a couple of horses and several dogs.

  • Christine Ball

    Christine was born in Mendocino County and raised in Cottonwood, California. She has been working in the veterinary industry for almost 10 years and says she could not imagine doing anything else. She currently shares her home with her 2 furry children, Debo and Patron. Both American Staffordshire Terriers that she rescued while working in the veterinary field. When Christine is not working she enjoys hiking, riding dirt bikes, gardening, cooking, crafts and spending time with her friends and family.

  • Stephanie Burket
    Kennel Supervisor/Technician Assistant

    Stephanie was born and raised in Redding, California. She started working at CARE in 2013. Since then she has adopted two animals through the hospital; Apple, a feline with one eye, and Clover, a dog that was rescued by our staff during a major wildfire. Stephanie also shares her home with another dog named Titan and two senor cats, Senior Flap Jack and Mr. Cool Dude. When Stephanie is not working she enjoys gardening, hiking and rock collecting. She is currently attending Shasta College where she is working on getting her associates degree in science to become a Registered Technician.

  • Dani Plake
    Receptionist/Kennel Attendant

    Dani was born and raised in Redding, CA. She shares her home with a few dogs, two horses and various other livestock. She joined our team in September of 2013 as a ROP student and was officially hired as an employee in March of 2014. Dani is currently attending Shasta College as a full time student and is planning on furthering her education in veterinary medicine. When she is not at work or school, she enjoys spending time hiking or hanging out by the lake with her friends.

  • Stacy Smith

    Stacy was born and raised in Northern California. She has spent the last 25 years living off the grid on 40 acres with her animal family. Stacy's animals include; 3 horses, 3 goats, 6 pigs, 5 cats, 6 1/2 dogs and several chickens and pigeons, and last but not least, a grumpy old parrot. Stacy likes cooking and reading and learning the 'old ways' as Buddy Goy is her hero. Stacy also enjoys spending time with her best friend aka her mom and her brother in Idaho.

  • Lucky
    Official Greeter

    Lucky came to CARE in September of 2013 after a destructive wildfire broke out in the Igo area of Redding. He was brought up front for adoption where it was quickly decided that this was his forever home. Lucky is the official greeter here at CARE, and he takes his job very seriously.
